What is Reflexology?

Reflexology, or "reflex zone therapy," is a holistic healing method involving pressure and massage of the reflex points found on the feet and hands. These points relate to individual glands, nerves, muscles,and organs. By using specific pressure techniques, energy blocks can be detected through "gritty areas" referred to as crystal deposits. These energy blocks reflect the parts of the body that have become imbalanced. By stimulating the circulatory and lymphatic systems, allowing the release of toxins, reflexology alleviates these blocks that cause pain, promoting the body to heal itself.

Reflexology is an extremely effective therapy for stress, tension, and fatigue. It can rejuvenate the entire body and reduce pain in the feet and hands. Like acupuncture, it can be used as a preventative measure against ill health.

What can I expect at my first Reflexology session?

Before starting a treatment, the reflexologist will discuss with you any existing ailments or specific pain you are experiencing in order to better target the reflex zones pertaining to your individual needs. Once this has been discussed, you will be asked to remove your shoes and socks. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing, preferably loose pants, so the practitioner can massage your legs and calves as part of the process of relaxing the body fully for optimum results.

You will lie down on a massage table on your back for the entire session. The practitioner will make sure you are comfortable before starting. Once the session has begun, relax and let go. Better results are produced while you are in a highly relaxed state. However, you must let the practitioner know if you experience any pain upon pressure, as this indicates a blockage of energy in that part of the body which relates to the reflex zone being worked. The therapist will work on that blockage with a lighter pressure and perhaps different techniques to release the blockage.

Some blockages can be alleviated in only a few sessions, while others may take several weeks or longer. It all depends on what is happening in your body.
