Tips for Safe Snow Shoveling

With the winter months fully upon us, understanding proper shoveling mechanics is essential to prevent injuries during this inevitable chore. We have compiled a list of tips to help you safely navigate any snowmageddon headed your way:

  1. Dress appropriately- layer up and most importantly, use snow boots /shoes with good traction to increase the friction between your shoe and the ground. No traction = more time with us.
  2. Make sure you are working with a shovel that is suited for you and your body- there are a variety to choose from including ergonomically friendly, longer handles, wider handles, etc.
  3. Know the snow. Wetter, heavier snow is more likely to cause injuries than lighter, fluffier snow but mechanics are important in either scenario to prevent injury. Bending from the hips / knees and pushing the snow with your legs without twisting from your spine is important for good spinal alignment. Partially filling the shovel will also reduce the strain and remember- try not to lift the snow, just push!
  4. As always, consult your physician before engaging in any form of physical activity.
