Tips for Safe Snow Shoveling

With the winter months fully upon us, understanding proper shoveling mechanics is essential to prevent injuries during this inevitable chore. We have compiled a list of tips to help you safely navigate any snowmageddon headed your way:
- Dress appropriately- layer up and most importantly, use snow boots /shoes with good traction to increase the friction between your shoe and the ground. No traction = more time with us.
- Make sure you are working with a shovel that is suited for you and your body- there are a variety to choose from including ergonomically friendly, longer handles, wider handles, etc.
- Know the snow. Wetter, heavier snow is more likely to cause injuries than lighter, fluffier snow but mechanics are important in either scenario to prevent injury. Bending from the hips / knees and pushing the snow with your legs without twisting from your spine is important for good spinal alignment. Partially filling the shovel will also reduce the strain and remember- try not to lift the snow, just push!
- As always, consult your physician before engaging in any form of physical activity.
